POPPocc. Occupations in the Population Censuses of Paris (1926-36)

Abstract

This article introduces POPPocc, a harmonized occupational dataset built from the nominative population censuses of Paris for 1926, 1931, and 1936–the POPP database. Drawing on 8.5 million individual records, we standardize highly heterogeneous occupational strings and jointly process occupational titles and employment statuses. We then code occupations into complementary historical classifications, including HISCO, HISCLASS, and the contemporary French SGF nomenclature, while deriving labor-force and employment-status indicators. The resulting data support internationally comparative research on social stratification and structural change, as well as fine-grained analysis of occupational geography within Paris.
